"The NCAA ruling affected 18 schools, including Catawba College in Salisbury, which uses the nickname Indians. Only the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, which also uses the nickname Braves, was exempt from the decision. The school was founded as a college for Indians.
"Other colleges, such as Florida State and Utah, won appeals to keep their mascots because of support from Indian tribes."
