Foolish Courage, a poem

This poem was originally written for the week of November 16, 2008 (link) as fulfillment of One Single Impression prompt word, courage. I decided I did not like this poem posted there and did not wish it to be discarded or put into draft so I threw it over here.

A new poem on the prompt (courage) awaits on JIM'S LITTLE PHOTO SHOP for another problem poem on courage.

Foolish Courage
Saved
The End
? ? ?

now this is what they say
'it takes courage' you've heard
it'll work every day

dangerous chances nay nay
just a little courage
will go a long long way

no simple one has sinned
you watch I'll take my chance
foolishness to the wind

you loathsome devil you
o' strong disastrous son
kill my mom not her due

down I'll step right away
the ledge invites me so
die alone 'nother day

There is a sense of jaunty wackiness and devil-may-care, as if the persona is just playing with words, and yet there seems a lurking hurt and bitterness prompting these rash thoughts!

    A very cleverly disturbing poem!

I like this, it points out that courage isn't just foolhardiness,
you have to know what to be afraid of-and have plan.
    I agree with Gemms, clever.

Excellently done! It delves deep into the process of courage - the tenacity, and the possible outcome.

There is a remarkable tension between the tone of the poem and the actions he/she is taking. Gothic and disturbing, Jim. Thanks for making me think about the nature of choice and drive.

I agree with Gemma, kind of a comedic/noir thing going on here, plus a whole other take on courage. And that photo just adds to the mystery. It looks out of place, like it's not true roadkill, but was dragged there. All very enigmatic!

    Jim--
Thanks for this thoughtful piece. Just wanted to post 'a', mind you not 'the', definition of courage:

The quality of a confident character not to be afraid or intimidated easily but without being incautious or inconsiderate.

Hope you come by my site--nothing controversial this week...smile!

The ledge does extend quite an invitation in this poem. The rhyme scheme helps the reader to veer away from the edge. Very interesting write!

    Wow, Jim--
Thanks for the further explanation on the VTH post.

This seems like an extraordinarily difficult thing to write about and make it come out with a 'halfway decent outcome' as you said.

Writing about someone who you basically believe to have been a coward as strange-courage takes a lot of courage from you.

    Very thought-provoking, Jim--
